The 1st Annual Jerry Stiele Memorial Domeball Tournament
The 1st Jerry Stiele Memorial Senior Domeball Recreation Tournament was a rousing success. Eight teams representing four different senior leagues participated.
Group A included "We've Got The Runs" and "Scared Hitless" from the West Metro League managed by Walt Stauffacher and John Carlson respectively, the "Rochester Relics" managed by Ben Borgen and finally the "Lumberjacks #2" team managed by Bob Adams.
Group B included "The Lutefisk Legion" resplendent in home made uniforms managed by Aaron Isaacs and "The Dirty Dozen(+2)" managed by Bob Guetschow both from the West Metro League, "Borndale's Lefties" an all left handed lineup from Roseville managed by Dennis Borndale, and the "Lumberjacks #3" team managed by Myron Fluegge.
In Group A round robin play "The Runs" and "Relics" were tied at 2 and 1 but the tie breaker went to "The Runs" for their spirited win over the "Relics" 18-13 which was the Relics only loss in the tournament. Likewise the "Lumberjacks #2" team took the #3 seed by their tie breaker win 13-8 over "Scared Hitless".
In Group B play "The Dirty Dozen+2" were the #1 seed at 3-0, with the "Lefties" at 2-1, "The Lutefiskers" 1-2 and "The Lumberjacks #3 at 0-3. The game of the day was "The Lutefiskers" against "The Dirty Dozen". In the top on the 7th inning the "Lutefiskers" were batting and were down 8-6 with 2 out and 2 on base. Phil Walter stepped to the plate and lashed a line drive to right centerfield that rolled all the way to the wall for a 3-run homerun! However the Lutefiskers couldn't hold the lead in the bottom of the 7th and "The Dozen" scored 3 runs to win 11-10.
In bracket play "The Relics" continued to ride the pitching of Dave Warnke and proved unstoppable. "The Lefties" were down early in the championship game but with a great late inning comeback were able to tie the score at 20 in the 7th inning. "The Relics" were able to pull out the win in the bottom of the 7th on a long bomb from Scott Hanson. "The Dirty Dozen" beat "The Runs" for 3rd place 15 -10 behind the pitching of Dave Hansing. "The Runs" did have 3 consecutive homeruns hit by Ray Glynn, Tom Foty, and Mike Borrell.
The Lumberjacks #2 with some timely roster additions on day two took 5th place with impressive wins over Lumberjacks #3 15-13 and "Scared Hitless" 17-10. The "Lutefisk Legion" took 7th with their win over the "Lumberjacks #3" team. The "Legion" did win the best team uniform competition; though, it must be said, no one else was entered. These "game worn" uniforms will be auctioned off sometime in the future with proceeds benefiting the Minnesota Streetcar Museum. (Don't hold your breath) The Lumberjacks #3 were the hard luck team losing 5 games by a total of only 15 runs.
Doc wishes to thank everyone for attending, for competing, and for being good sportsmen. A number of new friendships were made and many old ones strengthened. The only known injury was a knee injury suffered by a player on the "Lefties". Everyone please stay healthy and we'll do this again next year in the name of our dear departed friend, Jerry Stiele.
